About Islands

Three strips on separate islands — Main Island, Coral Cay and Atoll Strip — five to ten kilometres apart, each on a pad three metres above the sea, with open water between them and nowhere to put down in the middle. The one landscape where running short of height or speed has no easy answer.

Flights in Islands

  • Takeoff and free flight — Build speed on the ground or hand launch, fly where you like, and come back when you are ready.
  • Guided circuit and landing — Fly the pattern leg by leg — crosswind, downwind, base, final — then land and come to a stop.
  • Landing approach practice — Start on final, follow the glide slope and the PAPI lights, and touch down on the numbers.
  • Airfield hop — Fly to the next strip and land on it. The longest leg of the four.

The airfields

  • Main Island · 36 — 600 m, on a pad 3 m above the sea
  • Coral Cay · 27 — 600 m, on a pad 3 m above the sea
  • Atoll Strip · 27 — 1,500 m, on a pad 3 m above the sea

How to fly Islands

The Electric Sailplane and the Long-Range V-Tail are the aircraft for this one. Fly the hop at a safe height and only start down once the next strip is within gliding reach. Main Island and Coral Cay are 600 m, so touch down on the numbers rather than floating half the runway away.

Fly it from the ground view (press 3) to practise the way you would at the field, with the model coming back toward you, or from the chase camera (C cycles the views).
